Things We Love: Antlers
December 20th, 2010 § 26 Comments
It’s the seasonal event that many women dread: your husband comes home from a long, cold day of hunting with… a deer head. And, as if the subconscious Bambi comparisons aren’t bad enough, he wants to hang it in — yup, you guessed it — the family room. Thankfully, these designers prove that those antlers, far from being a woodsy, “man cave” (or back of the closet) accessory, can add a masculine touch to any room in your house. Want the look without all the tears? Antique shops are brimming with antlers of all kinds these days.
We love how Timothy Corrigan used antlers to spice up this huge space with its lofty ceilings. Sometimes one dimensional art can get a little, well, flat. This room definitely makes a statement.
Kathleen Rivers seamlessly combines the rustic with the elegant to create a room that anyone would love. That antler light fixture is so very fabulous.
Now that is a man cave. And a gorgeous one at that. This is how I picture the hunter’s house in “The Most Dangerous Game,” boldly displaying a collection of his conquests from all over the world. Did you ever read that story?
Nobody does the great outdoors better than Ralph… or the great indoors, judging from his gorgeous stores in NYC.
Incredibly tall ceilings like this is where those deer really shine.
We just adore Restoration Hardware’s new look. Don’t you?
A gorgeous spot by Jeffrey Bilhuber. Even with all those skulls there’s a sort of softness to the room from the color palette and that plush rug on the floor.
I know I may have mentioned this once or twice or a hundred times, but there is nothing better than a room full of books. And this simple pair of antlers as a centerpiece is perfection. Thanks for sharing Everything Fabulous, because that’s just what everything in this room is.
Super cool space from Decorpad. I don’t know who works at this desk, but I bet they do something really creative.
This is the ultimate chic cabin by Thom Filicia. From the looks of those oars, it seems a mounted fish might be joining the other animals soon.

ooohhh boo hooo I searched for 25 years to find a pair of antique elegant 12 point antlers similar to the first picture . Then i found a magnificent speciman from 1890 scottish and purchased them on line from the UK and to my dismay !!! 6 couriers later !! they were declared LOST only 25 kilomters from Florence so the search goes on I was going to ask one of my my artisans to dip them in silver leaf ahhhhhhhh
I love this look, especially the one from Everything Fabulous. Happy holidays!
Hello Beth!
Antlers are so “in” now, eh? I’m not sure if I would have it, but they look fabulous in every picture you’ve chosen. Good job!
NOTE: If you have a minute, please, go see my post today. It’s a “Thank you” note for all my blogging friends and readers.
Have a wonderful week!

Very good use of the antlers! A little distracting while your watching TV, though.
The mountain house from M.Elle Design and the Thom Filicia photos are my favorites.
This post is gorgeous.
Have a nice week.

beautiful images especially that one of Timothy Corrigan. best for the holidays
What a fun post!! LOVE the Timothy Corrigan room and that fabulous room from Elle Decor last month – it was my favorite feature – it is my dream ski house!!
These are wonderful. I love the combination of very elegant and classic with the antlers. The Christmasy one, the last one is really fun.
I will have to do a post on our cabin this winter. We have 2 chandeliers made out of antlers that we got from Jackson Hole. I love them.
i’m hoping to have a room in my house one day that I can work antlers in. great post. the photo from everything fabulous is perfect.
So, so beautiful! You always have the most gorgeous posts!
I am adding you to my blog roll.
Have a wonderful holiday!

Thanks for stopping by! I’m really like antlers now too, although I probably won’t put them all over. I picked up antler candle holder at the antique store & love it mixed in. This is a pretty post, showing how well it can be incorporated into decor.
It’s so funny that you posted about antlers today. I was looking at a home tour in one of my mags this weekend and saw this antler that i thought, i just had to have it! I’ve always loved this look and these pics showcase it beautifully! Well done:-). XX
That last photo is priceless! I love antlers, but my husband does not — nor does he care for animal print. Sigh. Did you see the great antlers Carolyne Roehm did in her friend’s Aspen house in the December Veranda?
Come see what is dear to me….on my post….and you will love the antlers…

That first space is just amazing as are the antlers above the desk and inspiration board. Just fabulous!
Who knew I could like them this much!
Fantastic collection of Antler photos. Inexplicably, I just love antlers too. I really don’t know why, as I am SO not the hunting type and I’ve never even eaten any venison or any creatures that comes from the forest for that matter, except mushrooms! They just evoke this wonderful old world decadence for me somehow. I have a wonderful antique Black Forest deer head with antlers in my home in Sun Valley- but it is not real, it is all carved in wood. I actually carted it back from a trip once, in the back of a limo and then onto a plane!! My husband disowned me for about a week. He sat pinned in the back of the car between the antlers and I swear his eyes were colder than the glass eyes of the deer. Then it took about half an hour to get it through the door of the plane. He’s since forgiven me though
Ya gotta buy these things when you see them!! Afterall, Vintage Bavarian carved wood deer heads of that size aren’t exactly a dime a dozen!
I love the look of antlers in a room and would totally use them in my home! xo
That last pic is giving me ideas of more things I can put on my poor dogs for their holiday pic! Hope you’re enjoying the holiday season!
I’ve seen these look so cool but I doubt I would put them up on my own wall.
antlers….yes. Deer skulls…..no!!
I saw a pretty cool chair the other day made out of deer antlers – I didn’t dare to sit on it so I can’t vouch for how comfortable it was but it looked fantastic!
Love all of these images! We have a faux, alabaster deer head in the bathroom….Antlers look wonderful on a table. Thanks, these pictures have given me great inspiration!

Gorgeous rooms. Merry Christmas to y’all!
I love using antlers in home decor…not a fan of the whole mounted head thing though. I have several pair of sheds that are currently in a mercury glass bowl filled with Christmas greenery. Thanks for the beautiful inspiration photos. Happy Holidays
Regarding the husband bringing home the doe head and the question of what to do with those antlers, remember Julie Andrews singing “Doe, a deer, a female deer..?” Just the bucks have antlers, at least for white tailed deer. My husband hunts birds, pheasant mostly. What to do with all those feathers? Make a wreath! It’s beautiful.
